Your Response to Hurt Reveals Who’s Leading Your Life

When the Pain Hits, Who Leads?

Getting hurt will reveal something real about us. It pulls on our emotions, and if we’re not careful, it will try to take the lead. Some of us react quickly—saying things we can’t take back, shutting down, or pulling away. But God never designed us to be led by our emotions. Galatians 5:16 NLT reminds us, “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.” That means there is another way to respond. You don’t have to move at the speed of your feelings. You can pause, yield, and let the Holy Spirit lead you from a deeper place.

The Fight Between Flesh and Spirit

There’s a real battle happening on the inside when you’re hurt. Your flesh wants to react in ways that protect you, defend you, or even get even. But that response doesn’t come from God. Romans 8:7 NLT tells us, “For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.” That’s why you can feel pulled in two different directions at the same time. And if you’ve ever wondered why you sometimes do the very thing you said you wouldn’t do, Romans 7:15-17 NLT sheds light on it: “I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate…” This isn’t just about behavior—it’s about who’s leading. When your soul follows your emotions instead of yielding to the Holy Spirit, you’ll find yourself responding from a place that doesn’t reflect who you are in Christ.

Let the Holy Spirit Lead Your Response

The answer isn’t pretending you’re not hurt. It’s bringing that hurt to God and letting Him deal with it in you before you respond through it. Jesus Christ made that possible. Because of Him, you don’t have to be ruled by what you feel in the moment. You can be led by the Holy Spirit, even when it’s difficult. 2 Timothy 1:7 NLT reminds us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” That self-discipline comes from Him. It’s the ability to pause, to check your heart, and to choose a response that aligns with God instead of your flesh.

Hurt will come. That part is real. But how you respond to it will either pull you deeper into your emotions or position you to grow in Christ. When you let the Holy Spirit lead, you’re not losing anything—you’re gaining strength, clarity, and a deeper walk with God. You’re learning how to live from the inside out, where your spirit, led by the Holy Spirit, governs your soul. And that kind of response doesn’t come from giving in to your emotions. It comes from surrendering to the Lord. ■
