Your King

unity-of-christ

There is somebody for everybody! I know you’ve heard this before, especially in the case of a person that is so eccentric or persnickety that you couldn’t imagine they’d be satisfied with the company of anyone. Yet, they seem to find a partner that is patient and appreciates their uniqueness. It is often someone that you and I wouldn’t think of as being remotely compatible with them; two people that seem to have nothing in common, but they are as happy as can be. Yawl know we gotta keep it real on this one, because we come across situations like this and get a little shady sometimes. We might not say it out loud, but secretly we think to ourselves, “I KNOW I can find somebody if so-and-so got somebody!!!”

We’d do well to remember that people don’t always see themselves the way that we see them, and we don’t always see ourselves the way that others see us. Proverbs 27:19(NLT) tells us, “As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person.” We get so caught up in the aesthetics of what we visually perceive that we make judgements about someone based on those external factors, but the heart reveals the core of who they are. A man may look to be a closed book on the outside, but his heart is open to love. It behaves like a magnet, drawing in the person who will respond to its call.

In 1Samuel, when the prophet was on a mission for God, scouting a new king for the Children of Israel, God told him to choose among the sons of Jesse. Samuel took to this task by judging based on appearances. 1Samuel 16:6-7(NLT) tells us, “6 When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the LORD’s anointed!” 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

My grandmother would say to us often, “You never know what’s in another person’s heart.” This is so very true. It doesn’t matter what we see on the outside, God knows our hearts, and at the end of the day, this is what will matter most to the person we ultimately marry. As a woman seeking to please and honor God, your heart must have room to love the person He has ordained as your gift. Others may have overlooked him. To some, he may be too short. Others might say that he’s not your type, but if his heart is large enough to hold faithfulness; if he can love you unconditionally and put your wellbeing above all else, then he’s your king. He’s a giant among men, even though he may only be 5 feet tall. ■
