How to Discern His Voice With Peace and Wisdom
Everybody wants the Red Sea moment—the parting, the miracle, the “look what the Lord has done” testimony. Our God is good, and He often blows our minds with His exceedingly abundant blessings. But what often gets skipped is this truth: not everything that opens is God, and not everything that feels good is heaven-sent. Discernment matters. Timing matters. And that all-important greenlight from the Father? Best believe—that’s non-negotiable.
There’s a difference between something looking good and something being God. Everything shiny ain’t sacred, and everything that opens isn’t ordained. One of the biggest mistakes that believers make is assuming opportunity equals approval. It doesn’t. Heaven gives alignment, not just access. Hell offers shortcuts that promise speed without submission. If we don’t learn how to tell the difference, we can walk ourselves straight into consequences we didn’t have to endure.
1. God Makes the Way — You Don’t Have to Manipulate It
First—you’ll know it’s from God when He makes the way, not just gives you the desire. God doesn’t just tell you to move; He moves things for you. When it’s God, doors open that leave you scratching your head—or His grace keeps you standing strong while they stay shut. You won’t have to muscle your way through; He’s already moving the pieces. That Red Sea didn’t crack because Moses was confident—it parted because God was present. Exodus 14:21 (NLT) tells us, “Then Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the Lord opened up a path through the water with a strong east wind. The wind blew all that night, turning the seabed into dry land.”
2. It Brings Glory to God — Not Just Gain to You
Blessings are meant to be enjoyed, but God’s favor is never only about comfort, recognition, or flexing on folks who doubted you. When something is truly from Him, it ultimately points back to His character and His ways, not just the visible benefits we receive. God’s work in our lives is always purposeful, and that purpose includes reflecting His glory. Psalm 29:2 (NLT) says, “Honor the Lord for the glory of his name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.”
If a relationship, opportunity, or season feeds your ego but weakens your obedience, that’s not elevation—that’s distraction. God’s favor carries purpose. People are watching whether we like it or not, and God hasn’t turned a blind eye to that. When He blesses, it is so His faithfulness can be made evident through our lives, drawing us closer to Him rather than pulling us away.
3. It Comes With Peace — Not Confusion Dressed as Excitement
God doesn’t whisper “go” and then leave you drowning in chaos. His presence carries clarity. His direction comes with peace that steadies you, even when the assignment is big. That doesn’t mean there won’t be challenges—but it does mean there won’t be constant inner turmoil.
1 Corinthians 14:33 (NLT) tells us, “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the meetings of God’s holy people.”
When we ignore this and move without His approval, the consequences are real—misaligned relationships, wasted years, unnecessary heartbreak, and lessons learned the hard way. God will still redeem, because He’s faithful like that—but He never intended for us to learn everything through pain.
So when God is in it, you won’t have to beg, chase, or convince yourself. His fingerprints will be everywhere. The way will open. His glory will be evident. Peace will confirm it. ■
