Christ Is the Source of Strength and Fruitfulness
Scripture Focus:
“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” — Colossians 2:7 NLT
We see it all through God’s Word: God wants us to live blessed lives—lives full of good relationships, health, abundance, and spiritual maturity. He wants us walking in the fullness of who He created us to be. That’s His desire for every single one of us.
But here’s the truth: a lot of people aren’t living that abundant life. And that includes believers. Sometimes, even when we’ve said yes to Christ, life still feels heavy. The life we pictured in our minds doesn’t always line up with the reality we wake up to.
Hope That Holds Through the Hard Seasons
Following Jesus doesn’t mean we’re skipping through fields of daisies every day. Life is messy. It’s complicated. It can be downright painful. But here’s what we’ve got to hold onto: hope. Psalm 33:22 (NLT) says, “Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in you alone.” That’s not just a pretty verse to stick on a wall—it’s a lifeline. Our hope is not in the job, the relationship, the bank account, or even in our own strength. Our hope is in the Lord alone. And when storms try to knock us down, that hope is what keeps us standing.
I know, though—it’s not always easy to cling to that. Some seasons hit so hard you feel like the truth is slipping right through your fingers. You’re alive, you’re breathing, you’ve got another day to praise God—but the blessings you’ve been crying out for? They don’t seem to be showing up. And discouragement has a way of creeping in, whispering, Maybe God forgot about you. But that could never be true. He will never forget you. He loves you and He has a good plan for your life.
The Dangers of Shallow Roots
When we let our roots grow down deep into Christ, something changes inside us. There’s a yes in our soul—a surrender—that doesn’t shake just because conditions aren’t perfect. That rooted life? It holds you steady. It anchors you when life tries to pull you apart.
If we’re not fully leaning on Christ, not living that fully surrendered life, arrogance can creep in. We start thinking we can handle it all ourselves. Life throws us into situations that test us—sometimes with people who seem determined to block, hurt, or hinder us. And what’s our first instinct? To clap back. To rise up with indignation and “bring it to them like they brought it to us.” I know that feeling all too well. But even that has to be surrendered.
Our Pride Must Bow to His Lordship
Because here’s the truth: He’s Lord. Period. And we don’t get to put ourselves above His call to love, obey, and trust Him—even when it costs us our pride. Romans 12:21 (NLT) reminds us, “Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.” That doesn’t mean we’re weak; it means we’re rooted. It means we’ve chosen to walk in His strength instead of our flesh.
We can’t get so locked in on our dreams, our timing, our blueprint for how life should look, that we forget to ask what Christ wants. And you know what He wants more than anything else? He wants intimacy. He wants closeness. He wants you.
A Life That Bears Fruit Starts with Abiding
John 15:4 (NLT) says it plain: “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.” This is not a theory—it’s truth. When we cut off from Him, we dry up. But when we stay connected, intimately and surrendered, our roots grow deep in Him. And when we’re living this life—one that is soaked in His victory—fruit is inevitable.
It’s Not About Religion—It’s About Relationship
Christ isn’t after half of us. He gave His life on Calvary for our sins, and He deserves so much more than a “someday when it’s convenient” relationship. He wants our hearts, our trust, our obedience, our love. He wants our lives fully surrendered. And that’s not about checking off a to-do list. It’s about living anchored in Him—rooted in a hope that doesn’t fade, grounded in a love that never quits, and flowing with a life that can only come from Him.
Let Jesus Christ be your source. Let your roots sink deep into Him, and let His strength hold you steady. Stay planted in His presence, surrendered to His Will, and just watch what He does. Your faith will grow stronger, your hope will stand taller, and your life will begin to overflow in ways you never dreamed possible. ■
