Let Me Pray on It

Colossians 2:7(NLT)
“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”

Eric had a reputation as a serial dater. An engineer, he’s good looking, smooth, and very confident. He’s always been known as the guy that keeps women on rotation. That’s why everyone was utterly shocked when they heard he popped the question to a woman he had only known six months. Deep down, Eric held on to what his mother had taught him since he was a young boy. She said “…marry a woman that loves the Lord and honors her body as His temple.” He never really shared his values with the women he dated, he just watched how they treated themselves. During all his dating escapades, he had never been rejected or told ‘no’ by any woman. So, when he met Janet at the gym and asked for her number, he was shocked when her response was, “Let me pray on it first, and then we’ll see.”

Janet was raised by a single mother that was very loving and held strong Godly standards. From the very moment she showed an interest in boys, her mother taught her to treasure her womanhood. This is a lesson that God wants every mother to teach her children. It’s a lesson that grows deeper in Christ as we mature from girls to women. Heavenly Father commands in Colossians 2:7-10(NLT) “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. 8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. 9 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. 10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.”

God created us in His image to be His spiritual children. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to give his life as a sacrifice for our sins so that we could be saved. When we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, his Spirit comes to live inside us. Our bodies become the temple of God, because they house God’s Spirit! He teaches us in 1Corinthians 6:19-20(NLT), “19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” How we look, what we wear, what we do or where we work doesn’t make us treasures. God made us treasures when He sent His Son to die for our sins.

We live through Jesus Christ. This means that we live from the inside out. Like many single women, Janet had a longing in her heart to be married to a good and Godly man, but her greatest longing was to grow closer to God and have a tighter relationship with Him. Heavenly Father knows when we’re honoring Him with our bodies, and the result of doing this is witnessed through the rewards He gives us. Psalm 37:4(NLT) declares, Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desire.” Honoring Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ sets off a chain of events that positions us in the right place at the right time. It all comes from the love we show Him when we let Him lead us as we humbly follow Him through obedience to His Word.

Just because a man shows interest in you, it doesn’t mean he’s the one God has ordained to walk with you through life. We are to be kind, show Godly love and respect, but most importantly, we must have faith in the reality that God has made us His treasure. He’s the One who tells us what is right for our lives. Janet was spiritually mature enough to know that we shouldn’t ever make decisions without consulting our Heavenly Father. She is attractive, but so were all the other women Eric dated. He responded to the love of God in her heart. This is what drew him in. Do you believe God’s power can work in you this way? If you are the least bit skeptical, pray on it. Let the Lord show you what He will do when He’s first in your heart and you’re committed to honor Him with your temple. ■
