Choosing the Love of Christ in Action

The Sacrifice of Surrender

Luke 6:27 (NLT) says, “But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you.” Choosing to love through Christ requires surrender to the Holy Spirit—and surrender always involves sacrifice. It means we’ve got to let go of our own way and hold back that natural urge toward revenge or self-protection. To practice love in the face of conflict is to crucify impulses of anger, fear, and vengeance, and to intentionally replace them with Christlike love. We don’t clap back in the middle of heat. Instead, we let the Spirit increase as we decrease. We let the love of Christ reshape our heart, build spiritual strength, and position us to witness the power of God’s Spirit at work. It’s not easy, but it’s where true transformation begins.

Love that Moves, Not Just Feels

Luke 6:35 (NLT) reminds us, “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked.” This is the heart of God’s love in action—extending kindness and generosity to those who may have wronged us. Jesus never repaid evil for evil; He always chose peace, obedience, and alignment with the Father’s Will. The world pushes payback, but Christ calls us higher. When we respond with love instead of retaliation—even to the ungrateful or the wicked—we reveal His character living in us.

Let the Spirit Lead

We grieve the Holy Spirit when we resist His leadership and don’t surrender to Him. The greatest thing we can do for ourselves is to give Him permission to be in the driver’s seat, because He’s going to guide us closer to Jesus. John 16:13 (NLT) says, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.” The Spirit never acts apart from Christ—He works in perfect unity with the Living Word, our Lord and Savior. The Spirit’s role is to guide, to reveal, and to equip us with wisdom in everything that we do. When we surrender to Him, we gain discernment, strength, authority, and the ability. These are treasures that we desperately need, and He supplies them in abundance. Through the Spirit, we can love in a way that reflects Christ Himself, and we can do this even in the hardest places of life.

Living a Christlike Love

Applying God’s Word to daily life isn’t complicated, but it changes everything. When we make the choice to love like Christ, it shifts how we move, how we think, and how we treat people. Love isn’t just a nice idea—it’s something we practice on purpose, day after day, even when it costs us something. Surrender to the Spirit. Embrace the sacrifice. Keep walking in obedience. That’s how we honor God, and that’s how we step into the abundant life He has promised.

Reflection & Soul Work

Take time to examine your relationships and identify where resentment, anger, or fear may be holding you back. Write down specific people or situations where choosing love feels hardest. Next to each, note one practical way you can respond with Christlike love—whether it’s a prayer for them, a kind word, or letting go of bitterness. Reflect on what it feels like to surrender control to the Holy Spirit in these moments and how your life changes when love guides your responses.

Prayer

Dear Father God,

Teach me to love the way You love, even when it’s hard. Help me surrender pride, anger, and the desire for revenge. Help me yield to the Spirit’s leading so that kindness, mercy, and grace flow through me. Thank You for letting Your love overflow from my heart and transform every relationship in my life. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, I pray, amen. ■
