Our happiness matters deeply to our Heavenly Father, and we see this in the two extremely powerful scriptures of John 10:10 and Ephesians 3:20. These verses give us full permission to live a thriving and prosperous existence. Even if we’re not always fully aware of it, most of us instinctively expect to live at the level of these extraordinary truths.
In John 10:10 (NKJV), our powerful Lord and Savior declares: “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” Jesus makes it clear that his purpose for leaving the throne of the Most High, and coming to earth, is to give us a life that is not lacking in any area. Every moment of each day, we can walk in spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical abundance, flourishing in all that we set our hands to do. This is not some far-fetched, pie in the sky pipe dream; it’s a guarantee from our Heavenly Father.
Our Great Big Wonderful God is sovereign, perfect, and holy. He is all-knowing, all-powerful, and ever-present. There is no possible way that we could ever dream a bigger dream than the one He has for our lives. Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV) reinforces this truth: “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” John 10:10 and Ephesians 3:20 reveal God’s unlimited overflow. They communicate His willingness and ability to bless us, and they are a testament to how He blesses us. In these promises, we are empowered to rise above struggle and stagnation. We are given permission to reach out and grab the fullness of what He has ordained for our lives.
Our blessed Lord didn’t skimp on the truth in John 10:10 but laid out the whole deal. We have an enemy whose whole reason for being in the earth is to kill, steal, and destroy. Because he wants to disrupt our relationship with God and keep us from walking fully in faith, the devil seeks to come against the more than abundant life that Christ made available. The evidence of his insidious work is everywhere, and if we examine our souls, we might even find traces of it deep within. The cynicism of the world has reached a fever pitch. It’s pervasive and in every nook and corner of life. So much so that many believers look at the promises of God’s abundant overflow as a fairy tale rather than a present reality.
Doubt has crept into the hearts of many of us, and instead of standing firm on the truth of God’s Word, we hesitate and question whether His promises truly apply to us. We must seek to imprint the perfection of God’s nature and character upon our hearts and minds. Numbers 23:19 (NLT) tells us: “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?”
Jesus didn’t speak in exaggerations; he spoke the truth. His character cannot be questioned or impugned in any way. When he said in John 10:10 (NLT), “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly”, he meant exactly that. A more than abundant existence is about the spiritual wholeness, joy, and peace we have in him. It’s about a soul that thrives in God’s presence. The enemy wants to rob us of this treasure, but we must refuse to let cynicism and fear dictate our faith. Instead, we must recognize that it is our obligation and privilege to anchor ourselves in the unshakable truth of God’s Word. We should be fully persuaded that His promises are as real today as they were when He first spoke them.
Delighting in Him
Delight is not a surface level feeling, and it’s more than momentary happiness. It’s a deep sense of joy, pleasure, and satisfaction. It’s that soul-deep enjoyment that comes from something truly good. Once you discover the internal path to this state of being, you won’t ever let yourself forget it. Our souls crave the experience of this bliss and delighting ourselves in the Father is the pinnacle of all fulfillment. Psalm 37:4 (NKJV) declares, “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” To delight in our relationship with our Heavenly Father means to take great pleasure in our fellowship with Him. This kind of delight comes when our understanding of His majesty, sovereignty, love, and power connects with an unwavering faith in all that He is and all that He desires to do for our lives. We must be completely sold out on the truth of His willingness and ability to abundantly bless us above anything we could ask or think.
God’s promise in Psalm 37:4 comes with a condition, which means that in order to take hold of the promise, the condition must be met. He’s the Giver of all good things, but His blessings and rewards have levels. Anyone that is above ground and breathing is abundantly blessed, because they’re in possession of an opportunity to praise God one more moment. However, some desires resonate so deeply with us that our hearts yearn for them. These are blessings we believe will allow us to express ourselves in more meaningful and fulfilling ways—blessings like marriage, financial stability or independence, increased spiritual growth, greater health and wellness, better relationships, or the fulfillment of a life-long dream. Often, these are so deeply embedded in our hearts that they feel like part of our very identity.
Yet, God, in His infinite wisdom, does not simply grant these desires indiscriminately. He calls on us to first delight ourselves in Him. Jesus Christ lays this out beautifully for us in Matthew 6:33 (NLT), where he commands us to “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” It is clear that we must prioritize God’s presence, His Will, and His ways above all else. When this is anchored in our hearts, we are delighting in our Heavenly Father in the way He deserves and opening ourselves to the blessings He wants to give us.
This is the reason that there is a requirement that comes with Psalm 37:4, but we must know that this promise is far more than a transaction. It invites us into deeper relationship and transformation, and it’s the glorious apex of our partnership with God through the Lord Jesus Christ. By trusting His Will and Word, following His guidance, and walking by His Spirit, we delight in God. Our hearts and minds get totally plugged into His goodness, and this energizes our faith and causes a shift in our desires. By delighting in God, our prayer requests become purified, and shed any kind of selfish motivation. They are brought into harmony with His Will, and we begin to long for what He longs for. This strategically positions to receive the very blessings that will bring us true fulfillment and satisfy our souls beyond what we can imagine.
