When God Revives a Heart
Ezekiel 36:26-27 (NLT)
“And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.”
Our Lord has never been short on blessing His people, and Ezekiel 36 shows us that clearly. This prophecy was spoken to Israel while they were in captivity—not because God was unfaithful, but because their hearts had drifted. They had turned away from Him, grown stubborn, and lost the desire to live by His ways. And if we’re honest, that posture doesn’t feel ancient—it feels familiar. Like them, we can want what God gives without wanting how He governs—choosing our own way, then finding reasons to talk past His Word when it presses us too close.
That’s when God declares something only He can do: a supernatural work of the heart. He doesn’t demand reform first—He promises transformation. A brand-new heart. A tender, responsive one. A heart that burns for Him again. This promise finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, because it’s only through faith in Him that God removes what is hardened and replaces it with life, fire, and obedience from the inside out.
What it Means for the Heart to Burn
Scripture helps us understand what it actually means for a heart to burn for God. In Luke 24:32 (NLT), after the resurrection, two disciples walk with Jesus and don’t even realize who He is. Yet later they say, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” Notice what stirred the fire—it wasn’t emotion or atmosphere, but truth. The Word, rightly revealed, awakened something alive on the inside. Jeremiah describes it even more plainly when he says, “His word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in” (Jeremiah 20:9, NLT). A heart that burns for God isn’t hyped—it’s ignited by His Word and compelled toward Him.
Guarding and Restoring Your Heart for God
None of us are perfect, and our Heavenly Father knows that. Still, many of God’s daughters find themselves single, praying for a man who will love them well and treat them right. But here’s the truth: in order for someone to treat you well, goodness has to flow from your heart first. It always starts inside. Proverbs 4:23 (ESV)reminds us, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flows the springs of life.” What comes out of your life is a reflection of what’s living inside your heart.
I’ve talked with so many women whose hearts have been broken and betrayed by the ones they loved. It’s natural to feel crushed, cynical, or hesitant to love again. But God wants you to know He is the One who can come in and heal what’s broken. He won’t force it—His love doesn’t push or shove. It comes when we invite Him in.
Too often, our hearts hunger more for human love than for God’s love. We see, touch, hear, and feel people—but God? He works in the unseen, the eternal, the unshakable. Yet His love goes deeper than anything the world can offer. His love is infinitely stronger, and it’s everlasting. There is nothing He cannot do for His people. Only His promise of new life, and His Spirit at work inside you, can bring true hope when pain, shame, and hurt feel overwhelming. Lean on Him, trust His power, and let His love restore the heart that only He can make whole.
Evidence of a Heart that Burns for God
Psalm 51:10 (ESV) says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Our hearts are the core of who we are—they drive our choices, shape our desires, and even reveal the struggles we wrestle with. Everything we experience, whether joy or pain, flows from this place. A heart that burns for God isn’t just about feeling passionate in church or during prayer—it shows up in the way we love, forgive, and walk in integrity every single day. People notice how we treat those closest to us. They see it in our patience, our generosity, our ability to stay humble under pressure.
That burning desire for God transforms not just our faith but our everyday life. It makes our soul come alive with passion for our Heavenly Father, revealing a life that seeks to honor Him in every choice and action. A heart renewed by Him aligns us with His Will and produces evidence everywhere—because when God sets fire to our hearts, it changes everything. ■
