The Grass Isn’t Always Greener

Learning Contentment in Every Season

Philippians 4:11 (NLT)
“Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.”

When we’ve been in the same season for a while, it’s easy to grow restless. What once felt exciting starts to feel predictable. Life settles into a routine that no longer stretches us, and quietly, we start asking God, “Okay… what’s next?”

That question isn’t always wrong. We know God loves us. We believe He desires growth, expansion, and maturity in our lives. But somewhere along the way, the flesh slips in and starts telling a different story. It whispers that God is holding out. That there’s something better over there—some bigger blessing, some greener pasture—that He hasn’t let us touch yet.

But that’s not who God is. That thinking doesn’t line up with His heart or His Word. Psalm 84:11 (NLT) tells us plainly, “For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.” God isn’t hiding blessings from us. He’s not teasing us with what we can’t have.

Sometimes the real issue isn’t lack—it’s contentment. It’s learning how to stay grounded and grateful in the place God has us, even when the season feels quiet, repetitive, or uncomfortable. The grass only looks greener when we stop tending what God has already put in our hands.

Trusting God When Our Perspective Is Clouded

Our perception gets cloudy because of sin. We think we know exactly what we need, exactly what would make life better, smoother, or more fulfilling. But Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:8 (NLT), “Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him.” God doesn’t need our help figuring out how to bless us. He’s never been confused about our lives—not for one moment.

Everything connected to our destiny was settled long before we ever showed up on the scene. God says it plainly in Jeremiah 1:5 (NLT): “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you…” That means our lives aren’t unfolding by accident. There’s intention behind every season, even the ones we don’t fully understand yet. This is why the apostle Paul could say he learned how to be content. His confidence wasn’t in comfort—it was in knowing his life was anchored in God’s Will.

When Waiting on God Feels Uncomfortable

So if you’re in a season that feels dull and dry, or one that feels loud, chaotic, and unstable, resist the urge to rush God. Don’t feel pressured to help Him move things along. Trust that where you are right now is not wasted space. God knows how to transition you when the time is right. The grass is never greener on the other side of God’s plan—it only looks that way when we forget who’s leading our steps. ■
