Counting the Cost, Choosing Christ
Looking back, most of us have asked ourselves the hard question: was it really worth it? Was it worth the pain we carried, the consequences we couldn’t avoid, or the hurt we caused the people we love? Poor decisions always come with a price, but if we’re paying attention, we can grow from them. And for those of us who walk with Christ, even when we stumble, there’s hope. Because in Him, there’s no condemnation. God is faithful to take what the enemy meant for harm and turn it into something good.
Grace Always Has the Last Word
Romans 8:28 (NLT) says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” That verse has a way of lifting me when I feel like I’ve fallen straight into enemy territory. It’s not an excuse to abuse God’s grace—it’s a reminder that His plan for our lives doesn’t end when we mess up. His mercy picks us up and points us back toward His purpose.
When Temporary Wins Become Lasting Losses
Still, sin is never worth the cost. It leaves scars that can last years—or even a lifetime. It fractures relationships, steals blessings, and most importantly, disturbs our fellowship with God. Romans 5:12 (NLT) says, “When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.” That death isn’t just about our physical bodies—it’s the death of peace, joy, and intimacy with God. Sin may promise a moment of satisfaction, but we shouldn’t want to learn the hard way that the price is always too high.
The good news is that we don’t have to stay trapped in that cycle of consequence after consequence. Romans 6:6 (NLT) reminds us, “We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.” Through Jesus, we’ve been set free. Sin doesn’t get the last word—God’s grace does.
A Future You Can Trust
So when you’re at that crossroads, don’t just ask, “Is it worth it?” Ask, “Does this line up with who I am in Christ?” Sin will always overpromise and underdeliver, leaving us emptier than before. But choosing Jesus Christ leads us into life, peace, and a future that’s secure in His hands. Grace has already set us free, and in that freedom, we can walk with confidence in the One who calls us His own and promises never to let us go.
Prayer
Dear Father God, thank You for Your mercy that covers me even when I’ve fallen short. Help me to pause before every decision and weigh it against Your Word and Your Will. Teach me to walk in the freedom Jesus purchased for me, not giving in to sin, but choosing faith, obedience, and peace. Keep my heart steady, my mind fixed on You, and my life anchored in Your truth. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, I pray, amen. ■
