As Christians, being of service to others isn’t optional—it’s mandatory. This is one of those non-negotiables. It’s part of our fruit. One day, when God asks how we served His Kingdom while we were here on earth, the answer can’t just be about what we built for ourselves. It must include how we poured into others, how we blessed those who needed it most. So the real question we each have to sit with is this: “How am I being of service?”
1 Peter 4:10 (NLT) reminds us, “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.” This is a directive from our Heavenly Father. He gave us gifts not to hoard, hide, or spend selfishly, but to use well. We’re to use them to uplift, encourage, and support others. God’s love is never idle. It’s always moving, always reaching, and always making room. That’s why it will take eternity to fully experience His love—because it never stops flowing.
Hebrews 13:16 (NLT) says, “And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” If we’re really out here trying to please God—not just putting on a shiny, Sunday-morning version of ourselves—then this verse spells it out clear: do good, share what the Lord has blessed you with, and stop making it all about you. It’s simple, but not always easy.
Jesus Himself said in Matthew 20:28 (NLT), “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” The Savior of the world—God in the flesh—humbled Himself to serve. If He could kneel and wash feet, we can certainly humble ourselves to be a blessing wherever He places us. His example teaches us that service isn’t just action—it’s attitude. It’s a heart posture. His humility was unmatched, and if we’re truly following Him, our hearts should mirror His: unselfish, compassionate, and open.
We carry God’s seed. That means we don’t get to fall back on excuses like “I didn’t know” or “I don’t know how.” God has planted His seed, the Holy Spirit, inside us, and with this comes responsibility. But here’s the grace in it: we’re not expected to have it all figured out. James 1:5 (NLT) says, “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” So ask. Ask for wisdom. Ask for direction. Ask for a heart that beats like the heart of Christ. Because you don’t have to serve out of your own strength. Let the Holy Spirit tenderize your heart. Let Him soften your pride and bring clarity to your vision. He’ll guide your steps—if you’re willing to follow.
This kind of service isn’t about putting on a show—it’s not for applause or attention. It’s about presence. It’s about showing up with a heart that’s open, willing, and surrendered. That’s what pleases the Father. Because at the end of the day, real service isn’t just about what you do—it’s about letting the love of God move through you. It’s action rooted in devotion, compassion, and humility. It’s how we become more and more like Christ—not just in word, but in the peaceful and powerful way that we live.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
In the precious name of Jesus Christ, thank You for trusting me with gifts that were never meant to be kept to myself. Forgive me for the times when I made it about me—for the moments when I hesitated to serve, gave half-heartedly, or ignored the quiet nudges of Your Spirit. Teach me what true service looks like. Let it flow from a heart that’s tender, a spirit that’s willing, and a life that’s surrendered.
Open my eyes to the needs around me and open my heart to respond. Let my love for You be seen in how I treat others—in how I give, and how I show up for others. Make me a vessel that You can employ for Your Kingdom. I don’t want to sit on the gifts You gave me—I want to pour them out wherever You lead me. Let my service not just be good deeds, but worship that pleases You.
In Jesus’ name, I pray,
Amen. ■
