Salena is a Christian woman that had been on her job for more than 15 years, and she had never dated anyone from the workplace; had never even considered it. She thought doing so would provide an opportunity for too many people to get in her business. A very private person, she was adamant about keeping her personal life very separate from her work environment. One day, she was caught off guard by a new employee, a security guard, and he asked her for her phone number. Handsome, confident, and very respectful in his approach, she shocked herself and gave him her number.
As a professional woman, she was surrounded by men that earned as much as she did if not more, but they seemed indifferent to her single status, and none of them ever approached her. So, Salena went for it, and she and the new security guard began dating. The next couple of weeks, she found herself wondering what to do. Everything felt new, exciting, and terrifying, all at once. At his urging, they moved very quickly. She prayed to God for guidance and direction, and although she felt that things were moving too fast, she decided not to pull back but to plunge in wholeheartedly.
You may have heard a similar story like this, perhaps it happened to someone you know. Salena wanted to cross paths with someone compatible, but she would not be as patient with God’s answer as she had been with many of the Mr. Wrongs of her past. She assumed the security guard was a reward for all the times she had been lonely and waited for the right person, but even if this is our assumption, we still need to hear from God. Proverbs 4:7 tells us that God’s wisdom is the principal thing. This means it’s first in comparison to all the other advice, counseling, and guidance we receive from other sources, and it also supersedes any assumptions we may make ourselves.
Proverbs 2:6-8(ESV) tells us, “6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; 7 he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints.” Heavenly Father is a shield to those that seek the treasure of His wisdom. Every Word He speaks is flawless, and He continually speaks sound counsel and judgment to us through His Word and His Spirit.
Many of us have a tendency to feel angst and pressure from the possibility of missing out. This is especially true when we’ve been single as long as Salena. When we pull back the layers of this angst, we’ll find fear and doubt are at the root. When you are faced with the wonderful possibility of having your destiny partner in your life, you are also faced with the reality that you don’t want to go back to where you were. Wondering whether God will straightforwardly give you a “Yes, he’s the one” or “No, this is not for you”, like Salena, you may be tempted to take matters into your own hands, and jump in without caution. This is never wise.
So many women meet someone new and question God’s commitment to store up sound wisdom for them to use when they need it most. They question the shield He places around us when we’re committed to seek His wisdom. Although we may not realize it, questioning whether we will hear from God equates to doubting the Father’s Word. If He tells us He will give us wisdom, then we should trust that it is only a matter of asking and being patient. If we do not trust God in this way, it speaks to our level of faith when it comes to marital partnership. We must trust God with our whole hearts. His timing is perfect and if we seek Him with an earnest desire to receive His wisdom, and an earnest commitment to follow the wisdom He provides, we never have to question it. He will absolutely give us the wisdom and knowledge to choose what HE desires for our lives.
